Or the first time I met where such a massive action aimed at discrediting the film work. I get the impression that most of the crushing reviews are written by people who have not even seen the trailer but want to join other critics.
I consider myself as an musicals, I know Webber's works very good, Cats" by heart. I have seen musical on DVD and on stage. So I know what I'm writing about. Seeing the trailer did not frighten me - on the contrary, it raised excitement. Tom Hopper's visual experiment (furry actors) convinced me.
After the American premiere before Christmas Eve, depressing the film to the lower fifty on IMDB I could not believe it. I went to the cinema as soon as possible.
I am convinced that the film has been subjected to a planned trolling attack to ridicule it. I have read many critical reviev - I will try to answer for some of them.
1. "Bad CGI. The effects are exactly as they should be. They are not primitive, they do not interfere with the plot. If anyone wants to watch dancing trees and exploding space stations, let them go to the Avengers.
2. "No plot. This could be an objection rather to Webber than to Hopper. The musical itself is rather a collection of loosely connected songs and dance arrangements (because it's just a set of Elliot's poems. Hopper does a lot to baste this string in a syntactic scenario, adding dialogues here and there, changing the order of the songs. He frames the plan smoothly, jumping from the street to the bar, to the station, barge, to the apartment, the railway bridge over the River Thames.
2. "Judi Dench with a mustache is wagging her tail. How should the old cat look according to you? Female cats, unlike humans, also have a mustaches. Body-independent movements of the cat's tail are also a part of cats behavior.
The conventionality of the cat-people's characters did not blatantly somehow anyone in the theater but suddenly began to irritate everyone in movie.
I don't think Hopper's "Cats" is an outstanding film, but a very good adaptation. He likes to go against the tide. He proved this in Les Misérables, where he generated a naturalistic world much closer to the original Hugo's work than to the Claude-Michel Schönberg's musical. London in his vision of "Cats" is a bit surreal, shown from a cat's perspective, one will not see there humans.
What's good in the movie:
- camera movement adapting dynamics to the cat's eye
- color tone
- lots of hidden gems (I advise you to have a good look at the place names, content of ads on Picadilly Circus in the background)
- modern choreography, it is no longer the work of the Gillian Lynne) but sparkling (except for Franceska Hayward's classical dance) hip-hop and breakdancing arrangements
- excellent acting, especially Ian McKellen's autopathy, but also a concert by Lady Judi Dench. James Corden and Rebel Wilson perfectly embedded in their episodes.
The film is not perfect - contrary to expectations Jennifer Hudson didn't convince me (I expected much more from her "Memory. Hayward plays mainly with beauty and dance but not with skills. However, this is a very good adaptation of the musical and I look forward to Blu-Ray (which I am afraid will be on the market soon.
In conclusion, I will answer one more objection I encountered. what is the target group of this film. Simple - fans of musicals, fans of good music. Unfortunately a group to small compared to young recipients, who are moved by a tree repeating one English-Dutch phrase over and over and over again talking with a raccoon. Therefore, the film will have an undeserved flop. Who is involved? I do not know.
